Green Initiatives

Reducing Our Environmental Impact to Ensure Sustainability and Access For Future Generations

At Beaver Run Resort, we believe in doing the right thing and protecting our beautiful Rocky Mountains. We’ve created a “green committee” who is focused on reducing our environmental impact, increasing our recycling program, and reducing our carbon footprint. Currently the resort does the following:

Recycling Efforts

  • All paper including newspapers, magazines and office paper is recycled
  • Guest recycling bags are available in all guest rooms
  • Additional recycling is available in all lobbies, conference center, Building 3 pool area and outside of Concierge (more locations to be added)
  • All departments recycle paper, plastic, aluminum
  • We recycle all grease/oil produced in our kitchens and it is repurposed into biofuel.

Awards

  • Received the Resource Wise Bronze Certification from High Country Conservation Center in 2022. The Resource Wise program acknowledges businesses in Summit County that save money through sustainability efforts, while having a positive impact on Summit County’s carbon footprint
  • Won the Energy Champion Award from High Country Conservation Center for our garage lighting project, where we converted 63 metal halide lights with more efficient LED canopy fixtures that have sensors. The sensors dim the lights to 30% when there is no activity in the area. This effort is expected to save more than 70,000 kWh of energy every year.

Food & Beverage Initiatives

  • We switched from plastic to paper to-go bags in our dining outlets and market.
  • Our food and beverage department recycles all grease/oil that is utilized in our kitchens and it is repurposed into biofuel.
  • Instead of using disposable paper and plastic products, we switched to reusable plates and glass ware in Coppertop Bar & Restaurant and The Beaver Den Food Court. We now service dish collection at our conservation stations (formerly known as “trash stations”) where staff collects and sorts waste into bins for the landfill, recycling and composting, which has dramatically increased our waste diversion efforts.
  • All to-go containers in our food an beverage outlets are sourced from eco-friendly biodegradable materials.

Green Purchasing Efforts

  • Copy paper that is 20% recycled post consumer waste
  • Toilet paper for guest rooms is EPA compliant with at least 20% post consumer waste materials
  • Facial tissue and bulk rolls of toilet paper for common areas are 100% recycled
  • All in-room and bulk coffee for restaurants is USDA Organic
  • Developing private label, all natural, eco-friendly in room amenities

Sustainability Efforts

  • EV charging stations are installed at Beaver Run in our parking garage on level 4 (G4)
  • Energy-efficiency upgrades have been completed to our boiler systems, including pumps, boosters, controls and heat exchangers
  • Partnered with Clean the World to collect and upcycle all used soap bars to divert this waste from the landfill
  • Converted all 234 fluorescent lights in the conference center to LED lights
    • Replaced all of the bar lighting in Coppertop (50 bulbs) with LED lights
    • Replaced the incandescent lights in the Building 2 & 3 hallways with LED bulbs
  • Water conservation cards are located in the rooms for guest choice on towels
  • Low-water use toilets are being installed on an as-needed basis
  • Sheets are washed every 4th day, unless specifically requested by the guest
  • Old furniture from condos and conference center is sold or given away to be reused to further our waste diversion efforts

Sustainable Breck

  • The Town of Breckenridge adopted a plan to reduce the use of disposable bags, beginning October 2013, as part of its Sustainable Breck Plan. Our grocery stores will no longer provide plastic disposable bags, but you can purchase paper bags. Shop like a local and use a more sustainable option: a reusable bag. You will find these available for purchase in our Skywalk Market at Beaver Run Resort and in most retail stores in Breckenridge. For more information regarding this initiative, please visit townofbreckenridge.com

Here are a few more tips on how to be more sustainable and reduce your impact during your stay in Breckenridge:
  • Bring a reusable water bottle. We have a bottle refill station in the conference center and there are several other refill stations around town.
  • Use public transportation. The Town of Breckenridge has a free bus system, called the FREERIDE. Or, use the free in-town Beaver Run shuttle instead of driving your own vehicle. In Breckenridge, we like to encourage Boots, Bikes or Bus.
